Advantages definitely include being able to travel all over the world and working with scientists in different countries. Being able to make a difference is also a big advantage, and being able to do it as a job which I love makes it even better.

A disadvantage is that unfortunately the places I visit for work often require flights, which aren’t that great for the environment. Train travel is always considered first but isn’t always possible.

The hours are very flexible… but they also need me to be flexible.

Because you can be limited by how long it takes for machines to do things, or other people booking the same equipment sometimes I need to come in late, early or on the weekends.

But as a PhD student in theory so long as I get the work done my hours are flexible.

Also whenever I go abroad on a research trip or conference I make sure to book some extra time to have a holiday in the area. My flights are already paid for so I just have to pay for a hotel or something for the extra time i’m there.

Advantages include: traveling to conferences and meeting other scientist/experts, being able to contribute to something important and advance the work we do
A disadvantages is that there a lot of hoops to jump through to get where you wanted to go, but it all makes sure the work we do is to the highest standard so its worth it in the end
