I’ve not studied engineering but most subjects today will require the use of computers, at university computers are used to submit assignments for example. I think there will probably be specialty computer software, that engineers can use to design and test their ideas and work quickly, so I would say that being able to use computers is probably important.
Proper understanding of how to use computers is incredibly useful for any kind of science like engineering.
For engineering specifically using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) is really really handy. You can also use modelling and coding to help.
It’s maybe not as important as in Physics or Computer science but computer skills are still very important to basically everything.
It’s becoming more and more important to have good computer skills in most areas, but definitely for science and engineering!
A lot of engineering work that happens before the actual building of something will use technology in the design process such as Computer Aided Design.
In my area of nuclear science virtual reality is being used to design test mock-ups of nuclear power stations, so workers are able to actively train to do an activity before they do it in the real situation.
