You have to attendend university to train and learn the basics. Some career posts also require you to have special ceritification like to be an embryologist you need to have an MSc in embryology and a log book of the number of cases you take to be allowed to practice. To be a geneticist also you need to have a masters and atleast 50 logged cases to apply for certification.
University is crucial to get your basics right!

To become a professional scientist (someone who is paid to conduct scientific research) I would probably say yes. A lot of scientists like me have had to work hard at school and university to become a scientist, not many of us are earning enough money to say we’re rich. But the money isn’t bad! I love learning though and think that gaining qualifications is very important, but it’s not for everyone and their are alternative routes you can take to get to the job you want. There are examples of scientists who have not got degrees but are very rich you should take a look at: Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, they both dropped out of uni, but I’d say they were both geniuses with amazing ideas. If you’ve got an idea that you think will make you ££££ millions remember me and this advice 😛

There are lots of different ways to get into science and not all of them involve university.

However the majority of jobs (especially the high paying ones) require some kind of degree and probably even a PhD.

There are lots of ways to get involved with science but generally if you want to make it into a career then university is the best place to start.
